  English Spaces
English Spaces are designated spaces located within school or campus grounds which allow learners to gather and speak to each other and to staff in their developing English.
The spaces are designed to be attractive and comfortable so that learners can speak English freely in a relaxing environment. Many universities in Japan now have some kind of English Space. This might be a conversation lounge or salon, or a larger self-access center which has a conversation area. These places act as a bridge between the classroom and the world outside, and become a base for a community of language learners to grow and learn together. Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University's lounge (GSGU Lounge) was redesigned in 2012 and is a thriving hub of language activity, both English and Chinese. GSGU Elementary School opened its English World Terrace in 2013, and GSGU Junior High School opened its English Lounge in the same year.
英語スペース
英語スペースは、学校やキャンパス内の特定の場所に設置します。その空間に学習者やスタッフが集い、各々の英語力で、英語を使って会話をし、学んでいきます。
英語スペースは、リラックスできる環境の中、自由に英語で会話ができるように、快適で魅力的なデザインが施されます。日本の多くの大学には会話ラウンジやサロン、会話エリアをもつ自主学習センターなど、様々な英語スペースが設置されています。これら英語スペースは、教室と外の世界との橋渡しをし、学習者たちがともに学び、成長するための学習者コミュニティの拠点としての役割を持ちます。
岐阜聖徳学園大学（GSGU）では、2012年10月、英語と中国語の言語活動拠点として羽島キャンパス6号館1階の『国際ラウンジ』をリニューアルしました。
また、附属小学校は2013年11月に『English World テラス』をオープンし、附属中学校でも英語ラウンジをオープンする予定です。
Developing intrinsic motivation
English spaces are designed to supplement the English language learning which takes places in regular classes. The experience these spaces provide is quite different from regular classroom instruction. Learners are typically not required to attend, and can choose how they spend their time; they can play games, enjoy music, or just chat in English. At the GSGU English Spaces, learners can come as go as they please, and stay as long as they wish during opening times. They are always made to feel welcome and the atmosphere is very relaxed. The learners come to associate English with these positive experiences, which helps them develop intrinsic motivation for learning the language.
モチベーションの高まり
英語スペースは、通常の教室授業での英語学習を補完するようデザインされます。
英語スペースが提供する言語体験は、通常の教室授業とは全く異なります。出欠確認はなく、予習の必要もありません。英語スペース内の学習者はゲームをしたり、音楽を楽しんだり、お昼を食べながら英語で会話したりするなど、学習者が英語スペース内でどのように自分の時間を過ごすのか、その方法を自由に選ぶことができます。
岐阜聖徳学園大学の国際ラウンジは、開館時間中であれば、学習者は来たい時に自由に出入りし、制限なくリラックスした雰囲気を満喫することができます。学習者はいつでも自分が歓迎されていると感じることができるでしょう。
こうしたポジティブな体験の積み重ねによって、学習者が言語を習得しようとするモチベーションを高めることができます。
